New estimates of the total population of Svalbard reindeer were published in 2019 based on a comprehensive population count. The population is estimated to consist of around 22,000 animals. Brøggerhalvøya Svalbard Hotel The Vault opened 1st of February 2018 and is the newest hotel in Longyearbyen. The hotel has 35 rooms in total, with 33 double rooms and 2 single rooms. The hotel offers comfortable and modern rooms in a silent arctic atmosphere. Blood samples from 515 of the fox carcasses were screened for rabies antibodies with negative result. Our results, together with a previous screening (1980-1989, n=817) indicate that the prevalence of rabies in Svalbard has remained low or that the virus has not been enzootic in the arctic fox population since the first reported outbreak in 1980.
